quarterly: design*sponge

a few months back, design*sponge announced they would be doing a subscription box with quaterly. i've tried the occasional box here and there, but i always felt like they were just schlepped together with whatever freebies the supplier could solicit that month. so, i was quite intrigued by the design*sponge announcement because everything they do seems to be so thoughtful and deliberate.

boozy and bright

image via town

in case you missed it, town magazine teamed up with high cotton and bacon bros. to bring you some festive holiday cocktails. if you're traveling or being the hostess with the mostess, show your friends and family how it's done in greenville! (i will probably go for the yule shoot your rye out because i couldn't bring my stand mixer to richmond with me, although the buttermilk spiced nog does sound enticing.) get the full recipes here.

christmas center piece

i got to my parents' yesterday, and the halls had all been decked for christmas. i think my favorite decoration though is this cute center piece my mom made. it reminds me of something out of southern living. we have a lot of vintage ornaments that have accumulated over the years, and i thought this was a great way to display them with the silver and crystal. hope your next few days are just as merry and bright! i'll be posting fairly regularly throughout the end of the year, if you're looking for something to read on your days off :)

neue southern

image via b2b media
i waited a while to write this post because i was really debating about whether it belonged here. i try to keep this blog pretty positive; but honestly, not every experience is going to be great every time, and i want this to be an honest space. neue southern was one of those instances for me.

do or dont: christmas pineapple

image via this is glamorous
i just got off the phone with my mom, and she has already solicited my spry young muscles to help her polish all the silver for christmas dinner. (we have about 40 people over, so we need every fork, spoon and knife we can get our hands on!) breaking out the silver is an old southern tradition, but it's one that i absolutely love. there's just something so charming about it, and i feel like family silver is becoming something of a dying breed.

anyways, i recently stumbled across this photo on pinterest, which represents another one of my favorite old south traditions: decorating with pineapples. back in colonial times, pineapples were considered a sign of welcome...a tidbit that i must have picked up ages ago on a field trip to jamestown, but one that has always stuck with me. i love the idea of adding a pineapple to your christmas centerpiece or bar for a refreshing take on gold and live greenery. i think at christmas, it's a little unexpected and fun. what do you think — too tropical or just crazy enough to work?

new coat

the other day, i bought my first "adult coat." in high school, i got away with wearing my burton snowboarding jacket; and in college, i had a pink north face raincoat with a black down liner i could remove and wear separately...after five winters, it was finally time to retire that little number. so, i had been searching high and low for a nice coat that i could wear to work, out on the weekend and with formal wear. i was also looking for something a littler on the longer side to give me some extra warmth. i searched high and low, but at the end of the day, i didn't really want to order online without trying it on before hand.

but one random evening, justin and i went to nordstrom rack at about 8:30 pm to get him some work clothes. in the 30 minutes before the store closed, i somehow stumbled upon this amazing sam edelman coat that fit like a glove. i love the asymmetrical details and that i can dress it up or down. it even has a ribbed, sweater-like material on the bottom half of the sleeves that makes the coat super comfortable even when you're wearing multiple layers. and best of all, i got it for about one third of the retail price!

i've been a nordstrom fan for a longtime, so i'm really glad that they've finally set up shop in greenville. have you found any great deals there? i'd love to hear about them! if you haven't been yet, i highly recommend searching for your holiday outfit or some last-minute gifts there.

raffle win: olive + grey

i rarely win things. my mom is always entering contests and giveaways, and i just never understood how she gets so lucky. well, my day finally came! right before i left for thanksgiving, i got an email from amy over at urban digs saying i had won the big raffle prize from the stone's point block party :) so, i got to take this lovely piece from olive + grey home with me, and it is a beaut. the wood is really nice and sturdy, and has been roughed up just so. it's a (not so) little addition to the mantle that reminds us just how much we love our adopted state. thank you so much!

p.s.

if you're looking for more pieces from olive + grey, they will be at urban digs' holiday trunk show this weekend on december 5th and 6th. (i am loving that deer head!)
