Westminster 2013

the shopping network of dogs

Last night was the first evening of the 2013 Westminster Kennel Club dog show at Madison Square Garden.  This has to be one of the most bougie things I can imagine, and yet I love absolutely every minute of it.  This year, they recognized two new breeds- the Treeing Walker Coonhound and the Russel Terrier.

The way the competition works is that dogs must win their breed in order to compete for  their respective group.  The groups are broken down into Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding which were shown last night and Sporting, Working, and Terrier which are on tonight.  Once you win your group, you advance to compete for Best in Show.  So far, the group results are:
Hound-American Fox Hound
Toy- Affenpinscher
Non-Sporting- Bischons Frises
Herding- Old English Sheepdog

Every time I think I've seen the perfect dog for me, another fluffy little muffin trots up and steals my heart.  The show is really informative if you're in the market for a pet.  It shows you what a wide variety of dogs are out there; plus, they give information about the ancestry of the breeds and their temperaments and dispositions.  (I think my dream job would be collecting all this data...  Imagine being at a cocktail party and telling people you were a dog historian!)  Besides the facts, the pups all have personalities that speak for themselves.  These dogs are absolutely hysterical whether they're so cute only their mother could love them or they're misbehaving and jumping 5 feet into the air.  Check out some of the behind the scenes pictures below:
