Oscar Shorts

it's like tapas for film

For Valentine's, Justin got us tickets to go see the Oscar nominated Live Action short films (along with this amazing card).  It probably goes without saying, but they were so good!  Without giving too much away, here's the details:

Live Action
Asad Bryan Buckley and Mino Jarjoura
This was my favorite.  A dark comedy, the film follows a young boy in Somalia who never gives up hope despite the tough conditions of his village as they experience a drought.

Buzkashi Boys Sam French and Ariel Nasr
This film was so incredibly visually striking from the breath taking city scapes to the way the character's faces were shadowed and illuminated.  Set against the snowy mountains of Afghanistan, it chronicles the relationship between a father and son who come from a legacy of blacksmiths.

Curfew Shawn Christensen
This was my second favorite.  Shawn Christensen wrote, directed and starred in this short which chronicles an evening his character spends with his smart-ass, fourth-grader neice.

Death of a Shadow (Dood van een Schaduw) Tom Van Avermaet and Ellen De Waele trailer
This film is hard to describe without giving too much away, but visually it has a Steam Punk kind of aesthetic while orally it showcases the dynamic linguistic history of Belguim.

Henry Yan England details
Not much is available online about this film (not even a trailer), so I'll respect Yan England's apparent wishes and not reveal the plot.  I will say that if you're in any way, shape, or form interested in French that you should try and get to a screening of this short.  The vocabulary isn't too complex and it's a great way to practice your compĂ©tences françaises.

Along with the rest of the nominated films, above is one of my favorite animated shorts that also happened to get nominated this year; and below is the Disney nominee which I hear is amazing.  If you get the chance to go to a screening this weekend for any of the categories, I highly recommend it!
